Mini baccarat is the version of baccarat you are most likely to meet on a casino floor or in an app. The name sounds like a cut-down game, but nothing about the game itself is smaller: the cards, the drawing rules and the payouts are exactly the same as in "big table" baccarat. What is smaller is the table, the minimum bet and the ceremony. The dealer handles every card, rounds go quickly, and players simply choose Banker, Player or Tie.

Mini, midi and big-table baccarat compared

Casinos generally offer baccarat in three sizes. The differences are about who touches the cards, how many people sit down and how fast the game moves — not about the odds.

Online, almost every "baccarat" table is mini baccarat in all but name: one dealer, no player handling of cards, standard rules.

Mini baccarat rules in one minute

  1. Bet on Player, Banker or Tie (plus optional side bets such as pairs).
  2. The dealer gives two cards each to Player and Banker. Aces count 1, 2–9 face value, 10 and picture cards 0; only the last digit of a total counts (7 + 8 = 15 → 5).
  3. An 8 or 9 on the first two cards is a natural and ends the round.
  4. Otherwise the dealer draws third cards by the fixed third-card rule. No one decides anything.
  5. The total closer to 9 wins. Player pays 1 to 1, Banker 0.95 to 1 (5% commission), Tie usually 8 to 1.

That is the whole game. Because the dealer follows the drawing chart, there is no playing skill involved — the only choice you make is the bet.

Mini baccarat odds

BetWins (8 decks)PaysHouse edgeAverage cost per 1,000 staked
Banker45.86%0.95 to 11.06%10.58
Player44.62%1 to 11.24%12.35
Tie9.52%8 to 114.36%143.60

Ties push Banker and Player bets (your stake is returned). Leaving ties aside, Banker wins 50.68% of decided rounds and Player 49.32%. Banker is the cheaper bet even after commission — the reasons are in Banker vs Player. These numbers are identical at mini, midi and big tables; the full breakdown is in our baccarat odds table.

What the faster pace means for your budget

The main practical difference of mini baccarat is speed. A big table where players squeeze every card may manage only a fraction of the rounds a mini table deals in the same hour. More rounds at the same stake means more total money wagered, so the house edge adds up faster:

Rounds per hourExpected cost per hour, $10 on BankerExpected cost per hour, $10 on Player
60about $6.35about $7.41
80about $8.46about $9.88
120 (speed)about $12.69about $14.82

So a $10 mini baccarat player at a busy table expects to pay roughly the same per hour as a much bigger bettor at a slow big table. If you prefer an even faster game, speed baccarat pushes this to 120+ rounds an hour.

Is mini baccarat good for beginners?

Yes, for three reasons: the minimums are low, you never have to handle cards or remember drawing rules, and the dealer settles everything. The one thing beginners should know is that the fast pace makes it easy to bet more than you intended. Two simple habits help:

Mini baccarat and the scoreboard

Mini tables usually display an electronic scoreboard — bead plate and big road — for the current shoe, exactly like live tables. Players often keep their own record too. Whatever the scoreboard shows, the next round is dealt with the same probabilities; a run of five Bankers does not make Player "due". If you want to keep a clean record of a mini baccarat shoe, the free Baccarat Scoreboard app builds the big road and derived roads as you tap in each result.
